This garden was installed by the UConn Master Gardener Program as an educational tool for incorporating native ferns into the home environment. It is also a test site for the Hardy Fern Foundation to determine cold hardiness for a variety of fern species. The garden currently contains over 350 native woodland ferns of sixteen separate species. New species will continually be introduced as the garden progresses.

Never Collect Ferns From the Wild
In nature, ferns serve a far greater purpose to the environment. Ferns help aid in erosion control and soil stabilization. The main structures of ferns, which perform these tasks are the rhizomes and the root systems. The rhizomes, because they are thin, long and grow horizontally beneath the surface of the ground, help to stabilize the soil. The root systems of ferns are well branched and add moisture to soil, helping to preventing erosion. When you buy ferns, look for reputable dealers who state explicitly that their plants are nursery propagated. Grow only those plants for which you have the proper conditions.
